To ethyl 4-phenylthiazole-2-carboxylate (1 g, 4.3 mmol) in anhydrous THF was added LiAlH4 and the mixture was stirred for 1 hour. The reaction was quenched with water, extracted with EtOAc and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solution was concentrated under vacuum to afford (4-phenylthiazol-2-yl)methanol as a white solid (0.9 g). MS (ESI) m/z 191 (M+H+).
