Procedure

A mixture of ethyl 3-(4,6-dihydroxy-4,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidin-2-yl)propanoate (400 mg, 1.14 mmol), p-toluenesulfonic acid (210 mg, 1.14 mmol), and toluene was heated to 110° C. for 2 h. The reaction was then cooled to room temperature, the mixture was neutralized with saturated sodium carbonate solution to pH 7 and then extracted with EtOAc (50 mL×3). The combined organic layers were washed with brine (30 mL), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure; and the residue was purified by prep-TLC to give the title compound (100 mg). MS (ESI): m/z 317 [M+H]+
