To a stirred solution of thionyl chloride (1.4 mL, 7.5 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (30 ml) at 0° C. was added a solution of lipoic acid (3.0 g, 5 mmol), dissolved in dichloromethane, dropwise over 1 h. The mixture was allowed to stir for additional 3 h. at the same temperature. After completion of the reaction the solvent was removed under vacuum using a dry-ice collection trap being very careful not to heat the reaction mixture since this will decompose the product. Reaction proceeds with quantitative yield.
