N-(3,4-Dihydro-7-nitro-2H-pyrano[3,2-b]pyridin-3-yl)propionamide (445 mg, 1.76 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (80 ml) and SnCl2.2H2O (2 g, 8.82 mmol) was added. The resulting mixture was refluxed for 8 h and then the solvent was removed under vacuum. The raw material was dissolved in ethyl acetate and washed successively with 2 N aqueous NaOH (2×) and water. The organic layer was dried (Na2SO4), filtered through a pad of celite and evaporated to afford the crude N-(7-amino-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyrano[3,2-b]pyridin-3-yl)-propionamide (390 mg, 99%) as a pale yellow powder.
