Into a 25-mL round-bottom flask was placed (2S)-2-phenyloxirane (1 g, 8.32 mmol, 1.00 equiv), 2,2,2-trifluoroethan-1-ol (5 mL) and bis[(trifluoromethane)sulfonyloxy]alumanyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (197 mg, 0.42 mmol, 0.05 equiv). The resulting solution was stirred for 2 h at room temperature. The mixture was concentrated under vacuum. The residue was applied onto a silica gel column with ethyl acetate/petroleum ether (1:20). Purification afforded 410 mg (22%) of 2-phenyl-2-(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy)ethan-1-ol as a colorless oil.
