To a stirred solution of 5-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)furfural (1.21 g, 5.0 mmol) in acetic acid (15 ml) was added nitroatehane (0.720 ml, 10.0 mmol) and ammonium acetate (1.16 g, 15.0 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 80° C. overnight. The reaction mixture was poured to ice water. The resulting precipitate was filtered, washed with water and dried under vacuum to obtain 1.38 g (93%) of the title compound. 1H-NMR (400 MHz; d6-DMSO): δ 2.62 (s, 3H), 7.37 (d, 1H), 7.46 (d, 1H), 7.79 (m, 2H), 7.98 (s, 1H), 8.09 (d, 1H).
