To a solution of 1-iodo-3-methoxy-5-(trifluoromethyl)benzene (2.23 g, 7.38 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) (20 mL) was added CuCN. The reaction mixture was stirred at 100° C. for 24 h, and then poured into aq. NH3 (100 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (100 mL). Separated organic portions were washed with brine (100 mL), dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated. Purification via flash chromatography (ethylacetate/hexanes: 5% to 80%) afforded the title product (1.3 g).
