Sodium tetraborate (1.20 g, 5.95 mmol) was dissolved in DI water (150 mL). 1,2-Ethane dithiol (5.00 mL, 59.4 mmol) was added, followed by acrylamide (9.31 g, 130 mmol), and stirred at room temperature for two hours to give a white-colored slurry. The solid was filtered off, washed with water and dried under vacuum, giving 13.1 g (93.2%) of Compound 1 as a white solid. 1H NMR (500 MHz, d6-DMSO) δ 7.33 (s, 2H), 6.82 (s, 2H), 3.37 (s, 4H), 2.69 (t, J=7.2 Hz 4H), 2.32 (t, J=7.3 Hz, 4H). 13C NMR (126 MHz, d6-DMSO) δ 172.68, 35.69, 31.35, 26.92.
