A solution of (3,4-dichloro-1,2-thiazol-5-yl)(3-thienyl)methanone (3.00 g, 10.2 mmol) and hydroxylamine hydrochloride (844 mg, 25.5 mmol) in pyridine (30 mL) was stirred 4 h at 50° C. then overnight at room temperature. After removal of the solvent in vacuo, addition of water (50 mL) and extraction with ethyl acetate (3×40 mL), the combined organic layers were dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified on silica gel to afford 1-(3,4-dichloro-1,2-thiazol-5-yl)-N-hydroxy-1-(3-thienyl)methanimine [3.15 g, yield 99%; HPLC/MS: m/z=279 (M+H); log P(HCOOH)=3.04].
