A mixture of 1-(2-hydroxy-3-nitrophenyl)-3-(2-(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-3-yl)propane-1,3-dione 26 (135 mg, 0.38 mmol), conc. HCl (0.2 ml) and AcOH (5 ml) was stirred at 100° C. for 3.5 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated and sat. aq Na2CO3 was added. The resulting solid was collected by filtration to give 27 as a yellow solid, which was used for the next step without other treatment.
