Procedure
Copper powder (231 mg, 3.642 g atom) was added to a suspension of Step 7 intermediate (3.4 g, 12.142 mmol) in quinoline (60 ml) and the resulting mixture was stirred and heated at 235° C. for 3 h under nitrogen. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with 1 N HCl and water. The combined organic layers were dried and concentrated. The purification of crude product by silica gel column chromatography by using 5% ethyl acetate in petroleum ether gave 2.17 g of the product as an off-white solid; 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 3.41 (s, 3H), 3.55 (s, 3H), 3.71 (s, 2H), 5.09-5.15 (m, 2H), 5.97-6.10 (m, 1H), 6.50 (s, 1H).
