Procedure

To a solution of ethyl 3,3,3-trifluoro-2-oxopropanoate (1500 g, 8.82 mol) in dichloromethane (5000 mL) was added benzyl carbamate (1330 g, 8.82 mol). After 2 days, the reaction mixture was filtered to afford ethyl N-[(benzyloxy)carbonyl]-3,3,3-trifluoro-2-hydroxyalaninate. The material was used without further purification.
