In a stirred apparatus, 222 g (1 mol) of butyl ethyl(2-ethoxyethyl)phosphinate (produced as in Example 7) are dissolved in 200 ml (2 mol) of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The efficiently stirred mixture is heated to about 90° C. and reacted at that temperature for about 8 hours. The water is then completely distilled off in vacuo. The residue is taken up in acetic acid and extracted. The solvent of the filtrate is removed in vacuo to obtain 156 g (94% of theory) of ethyl-(2-ethoxyethyl)phosphinic acid as oil.
