To a 100 ml flask were added 2.7 g of benzoyl hydrazine, a solution of 1.2 g potassium hydroxide in ethanol (20 ml) and 3 g of carbon disulfide. The mixture was heated under reflux for 6 hours with stirring. After the reaction was completed, the solvent was distilled under reduced pressure and water was added to dissolve the solid. The pH was adjusted to 6-7 with 10% hydrochloric acid and a lot of solid was precipitated, which was filtrated, and recrystallized with anhydrous ethanol to give 5-phenyl-2-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazole. MP: 212-214° C.
