Procedure

To a solution of cis-2,6-dimethyl-piperazine (600 mg) and triethylamine (0.80 mL) in dichloromethane (10 mL) at 0° C. was added dropwise methanesulfonyl chloride (0.43 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 16 h and then quenched with water (10 mL) and extracted into dichloromethane (2×20 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with saturated aqueous brine solution (2×20 mL), dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to afford (3S,5R)-1-methanesulfonyl-3,5-dimethyl-piperazine as a white solid (817 mg, 81%).
