To [3-(4-bromo-2-hydroxymethyl-phenoxy)-phenyl]-acetic acid methyl ester (3 g, 8.5 mmol) in DME (30 mL) under N2 was added phosphorus tribromide (1.2 mL, 12.8 mmol), and the reaction was stirred at room temperature for 6 hours. The solution was cooled to 0° C. and adjusted to pH 6 with saturated aqueous NaHCO3, and the mixture was extracted with EtOAc. The crude material was purified by silica gel chromatography to give the desired product as a colorless oil (3 g).
