Procedure
4-Cyano-4-phenylpiperidine HCl (10.0 g, 45.0 mmol) was combined with KOH pellets and stirred vigorously under Ar at 160° C. for 4 h. The reaction mix was cooled to RT and dissolved into toluene (100 ml) and H2O (100 ml). After separation of the layers, the aqueous layer was back-extracted two times with toluene. The combined organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, concentrated in vacuo, and dried under high vacuum, yielding a white solid.
