0.315 g (2.049 mmol) of 3-hydrazino-4-methylpyridine in 5.00 ml of ethanol was added to 0.400 g (1.708 mmol) of methyl 3-benzoyl-4-oxopentanoate, and the mixture was stirred under reflux for 8 h. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure giving, after chromatography of the residue, 0.305 g (47% of theory) of a reddish wax-like solid. 1H-NMR (CDCl3): see Table 2.
