To a solution of tert-butyl-1-piperazinecarboxylate (1.20 g) in acetonitrile (15 mL) was added ethyl 2-bromoisobutyrate (5.00 g) followed by potassium carbonate (0.975 g). The reaction mixture was heated at 80° C. for 12 hours, then cooled and partitioned between water and dichloromethane. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried (MgSO4). The solvent was evaporated and the residue purified by flash chromatography to give 4-(1-ethoxycarbonyl-1-methyl-ethyl)-piperazine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (2.19 g).
