To a stirred solution of 5-oxo-1-(3-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-pyrrolidine-3-carboxylic acid methoxy-methyl-amide (0.6 g, 1.89 mmol) in THF (6 mL) was added methylmagnesium bromide (1.6 ml, 4.74 mmol, 3.0M in ether) drop wise over a period of 10 min at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred for 3 h at room temperature. The reaction mixture was quenched with saturated ammonium chloride solution (2 ml) and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×15 ml). The combined organic layer was washed with saturated brine solution (25 ml). The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, evaporated to obtain 4-Acetyl-1-(3-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-pyrrolidin-2-one as a brown oil (0.5 g, 97%).
