5-(1-Amino-2-cyclopropyl-ethylidene)-2,2-dimethyl-[1,3]dioxane-4,6-dione (397 mg, 2 mmol) was added to a solution of sodium (45 mg, 2 mmol) in ethanol (3 ml). The reaction mixture was heated under reflux for 14 h, diluted with dichloromethane and poured onto ice water/brine 1/1. The organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate and the solvent removed under reduced pressure to give 231 mg (1.4 mmol, 77%) of the title compound as orange oil.
