A mixture of 47 mmol of toluene, 0.1 mmol of 4-dodecyloxycarbonyl-N-hydroxyphthalimide and 0.01 mmol of acetylacetonatocobalt(II) was stirred at 100° C. in an atmosphere of oxygen gas (1 atm=0.1 MPa) for 65 hours and thereby yielded 1.44 mmol of benzoic acid.
