A stirred solution of N-(4-methylphenyl)-2-{[(1,1-dimethylethoxy)carbonyl]amino}-6-methyl-benzamide (1.67 g, 4.90 mmol) in methanol (4 mL) under an argon atmosphere, is treated with a saturated solution of hydrogen chloride in dioxane (30 mL) and stirred at 18° C. for 210 minutes. The solvent is evaporated off under reduced pressure to give the crude product which is purified by recrystallisation from methanol-di-isopropyl ether to give the title compound as a colourless crystalline solid, m.p. 217–220° C.
