Procedure
To a solution of 3-hydroxy-1-{4-[(3R)-1-(p-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl)-pyrrolidin-3-ylcarbamoyl]-1,3-thiazol-2-yl}azetidine (370 mg, 0.827 mmol) (obtained as described in Reference Example 53(7)) in methylene chloride (19 ml) were added methanesulfonyl chloride (192 μl, 2.48 mmol) and triethylamine (348 μl, 2.48 mmol) in an ice bath. The reaction mixture was brought to room temperature in 10 minutes, and then stirred at room temperature for 1.5 hours. After checking the completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was partitioned between ethyl acetate and saturated aqueous sodium hydrogencarbonate solution. The organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The obtained residue was purified by chromatography on a silica gel column using ethyl acetate→ethyl acetate:methanol (98:2) as the eluant to afford 3-methanesulfonyloxy-1-{4-[(3R)-1-(p-nitrobenzyloxycarbonyl)-pyrrolidin-3-ylcarbamoyl]-1,3-thiazol-2-yl}azetidine (422 mg, yield 97%) as a pale yellow solid.
