Procedure
A solution of 3-(4-nitro-1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)-3-fluoro-2,6-dioxo-5-acetoxypiperidine (1 g, 2.9 mmol) and p-toluenesulfonic acid (0.28 g, 1.5 mmol) in methanol (10 mL) is heated at reflux for 5 h. The solvent is removed in vacuo to give 4-nitro-2-(3-fluoro-5-hydroxy-2,6-dioxopiperid-3-yl)isoindoline-1,3-dione which is further purified by column chromatography.
