To a solution of 3-[4,5-bis(4-fluorophenyl)-2-(1-methylethyl)-1H-imidazol-1-yl]-2-propenal (390 mg) as an E:Z (1:1) mixture in carbon tetrachloride (150 ml) was added iodine (0.1 g) and the reaction mixture was heated under reflux for 18 h using a 200W-tungsten lamp. After this period, activated charcoal (6 g) was added and heating was continued for a further 1 h. The mixture was filtered and the resulting pale yellow solution was evaporated to yield the title compound (384 mg) as a dull-white solid whose spectroscopic properties were in accord with those described above for Intermediate 11a.
