Procedure

To a solution of 18.35 g of phosphorous oxychloride in 55 ml of carbon tetrachloride was added dropwise a solution of 3-bromo-2,2-dimethyl-1-propanol in 20 ml of carbon tetrachloride. This mixture was stirred overnight, evaporated in vacuo, then evaporated twice from toluene at 35° C. and dried. The residue was distilled on Kugelrohr 100° C., 0.3 mm giving the desired compound as a colorless oil.
