Procedure
A solution of this ethoxypyridine (3.4 g. of base) in 5 N hydrochloric acid (100 ml) was heated under reflux for 21/2 hours. The reaction mixture was evaporated to dryness, the residue dissolved in a minimum amount of water, the solution basified with aqueous potassium carbonate, washed once with chloroform, and allowed to stand at 0° overnight. Crystals of 2-[2-(4-methyl-5-imidazolylmethylthio)ethylamino]-(1H)-pyrid-6-one were collected and recrystallised from water to give the pure product, m.p. 85°.
