Procedure

Trans 1,4-Dichlorobut-3-en-2-one (0.56 g, 4.0 mmol) in toluene (10 ml) was stirred with methoxycarbonylmethylenetriphenyl phosphorane (1.32 g, 4.0 mmol) at 90° C. for sixteen hours. Water (50 ml) was added and the mixture extracted with ether (50 ml, 2×25 ml). The extracts were dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated to give the title compound (0.11 g, 14%), spectral details as in Example 11.
