Procedure
The product of Example 20 was heated under reflux with an excess of 12 N hydrochloric acid for 10 hours and evaporated to low volume. This solution was basified by the addition of a basic polyamine polystyrene ion-exchange resin cross-linked with 2% divinylbenzene (OH- form) and the solution was evaporated to dryness to give 1-[N'-(2-((5-methyl-4-imidazolyl)methylthio)ethyl)guanidino]-8-[N'-methylguanidino]octane. To this product was added an excess of hydrochloric acid and the solution evaporated to dryness to give the trihydrochloride which was a glass: nmr:- (100 MHz. D2O) 1.4 (m,(CH2)6), 2.32(s,CH3), 2.76(m,(CH2S)), 2.84(s,(NHCH3), 3.19(m(2xNCH2)), 3.42(m,NCH2), 3.89(s,CH2S), 8.59(s,Imid2-H).
