Procedure

A solution of 4,5-dimethyl-6-o-tolyl-3,6-dihydro-1H-pyridin-2-one (177 mg; 0.82 mmol) in THF(5 mL) is treated with alane (10 equivalents) and the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 16 hours. The reaction is quenched with Na2SO4.10H2O (2 g) and the resulting mixture filtered and the insolubles washed with ethyl acetate. The filtrate is concentrated in vacuo to give the product (12).
