Procedure
A mixture of benzyl bromide (15 g, 0.0872 mol) and ethanol amine (26.5 g, 0.436 mol) was stirred at 120° C. for 3 h. The reaction mixture was diluted with brine and extracted with dichloromethane. The organic layer was washed with water and brine and dried over sodium sulfate. Solvent evaporated under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by column chromatography over silica gel using 4% methanol in dichloromethane as eluent to give N-benzyl ethanolamine (12 g) as a liquid.
