To a stirred solution of 2-hydroxymethyl-piperidine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (0.737 g, 3.4 mmol) in dry CH2Cl2 (10 mL) was added 3 A molecular sieves (1.03 g), N-methylmorpholine N-oxide (0.644 g, 5.5 mmol), and tetrapropylammonium perruthenate (72 mg, 0.21 mmol) and the mixture stirred at room temperature for 3 h. The reaction mixture was purified through a silica gel plug (Hexanes/EtOAc, 70:30 followed by 100:0) to afford the title aldehyde (0.500 g, 70%) as a pale yellow oil.
