Procedure

3 g of Pearlman's catalyst (Pd(OH)2 on carbon, 20%) is added to 10 g (43.23 mmol) of 5-benzyloxy-2,2-dimethyl-3-keto-pentane-nitrile of the title compound of Example 10a, dissolved in 100 ml of methanol. It is now hydrogenated for 7.5 hours at 10 bar and at room temperature. Catalyst is filtered out, and the filtrate is evaporated to the dry state in a vacuum.
