Procedure
Methyl magnesium bromide (27.6 ml., 2.9 M in ether) is added dropwise to a solution of 5-bromobenzo[5,6]cyclohepta[1,2-c]pyridin-11-one (20.02 g., 0.07 mol) in dry THF (300 ml.) with cooling. When addition is complete, the cooling bath is removed and the mixture is stirred for 20-24 hours. The solvent is removed in vacuo, the residue is taken up in water (300 ml.) and acidified by the addition of acetic acid. The solid that forms is collected, washed with water then recrystallized from 2-propanol to give 16.25 g., m.p. 226.5°-229.5° C.
