Procedure
From 1.0 g (0.0037 mol) of 2,3-dimethyl-4-oxo-4H-pyrido[1,2-a]thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine-7-carboxamide (Example 26), 50 ml of phosphorus oxychloride and 50 ml of chloroform and refluxing on a steam bath for eighteen hours, following the procedure of Example 27, there is obtained 0.89 g of 2,3-dimethyl-4-oxo-4H-pyrido[1,2-a]thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine-7-carbonitrile; mp 306°-307° C. after recrystallization from glacial acetic acid.
