Procedure
2,5-Dichloropyrimidine (11.3 mmol) was added to a solution of thiophene-2-thiol (12.3 mmol) in ethanolic (50 ml) 0.246 M NaOEt. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 15 min and heated under reflux for 2 h. The solvent was then evaporated, the residue extracted with chloroform, the chloroform solution washed with 2 M NaOH and the dried (MgSO4) solution evaporated to leave the sulfide; yield 89%, m.p. 65° C. (pet. ether b.p. 100° C.). 1 H NMR (CDCl3); δ7.03, 7.26, 7.53 (thiophene), 8.40 (H-4, H-6).
