Procedure

2-[4-(2-Azidoethoxy)phenyl]-1-ethyl-6-methoxy-1H-indole-3-carbonitrile (410 mg, 1.14 mmol), prepared as in step A, above, was suspended in a solution of MeOH (20 mL) and concentrated HCl (500 μL). Pd/C (150 mg, 10%) was added, and this mixture was hydrogenated at 30 p.s.i. for 1 h. This was filtered and the filtrate was concentrated. The filtrate residue was partitioned between EtOAc and 0.5N NaOH. The organic layer was dried and concentrated. Purification by silica gel chromatography (10-30%, MeOH/CH2Cl2) yielded 2-[4-(2-aminoethoxy)phenyl]-1-ethyl-6-methoxy-1H-indole-3-carbonitrile (298 mg, 78%), compound 267, as a white solid.
