POCl3 (20 mL, 218 mmol) was added into ethyl 5H-pyrrolo[3,4-b]pyridine-6(7H)-carboxylate N-oxide (1 g, 4.80 mmol) and heated to 35° C. for 12 hours and 50° C. for another 5 hours. The solvent was evaporated and poured into water. The material was extracted with CH2Cl2, washed with NaHCO3 and brine, dried with Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated. The residue was purified on silica gel to afford the title compound (0.5 g, 45.9% yield).
