Procedure
A 100 mL flask was charged with 7.36 g of cyclohexanone, 7.81 g of 1-methylpiperazine, 100 mL of anhydrous ethanol and 3 drops of concentrated sulfuric acid. After refluxing for 30 minutes the reaction mixture was cooled and stirred at room temperature overnight. Then a catalytic amount of Pd/C, typically 5 mol % was added and a balloon filled with hydrogen gas was attached. After stirring for 2 days the reaction mixture was filtered through Celite and concentrated to give 1-methyl-4-cyclohexylpiperazine.
