(S)-tert-Butyl 1-methyl-2-oxopyrrolidin-3-ylcarbamate (prepared according to Example 10; 300 mg, 1.40 mmol) was dissolved in 4M hydrogen chloride in dioxane (3.5 mL, 14 mmol), and the reaction was allowed to stir at ambient temperature for 16 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated to yield (S)-3-amino-1-methylpyrrolidin-2-one hydrochloride (211 mg, 100%) which was taken onto the next step without purification.
