(S)-benzyl-3-(tert-butyl dimethylsilyloxy)glutaramate (70 g) was dissolved in ethyl acetate (350 ml) and placed in a 500 ml glass pressure vessel. To this dry 5% Pd/C (1.4 g) was added under vacuum and pressurized with hydrogen gas at 2.7 bar overpressure. The mixture was stirred magnetically while remaining connected to the hydrogen source. The catalyst was removed by filtration and washed with a small volume of ethyl acetate (25 ml). The clear filtrate was mixed with water and dilute ammonia. The aqueous phase was isolated and the organic phase extracted with water. The combined aqueous phase was washed with MTBE and degassed under vacuum to remove traces of organic solvent. The mixture was placed in an ice-bath. The cooled aqueous solution was acidified using dilute phosphoric acid to obtain thick suspension. This was filtered, washed with cold water and dried to yield (S)-3-(tert-butyl dimethylsilyloxy)glutaric acid monoamide.
