To a mixture of N-(4-(hydroxymethyl)phenyl)-3-methyl-3-(2,4,5-trimethyl-3,6-dioxocyclohexa-1,4-dien-1-yl)butanamide (1.35 g, 3.98 mmol) and carbon tetrabromide (3.96 g, 11.9 mmol) in methylene chloride (30 ml), Ph3P (1.30 g, 4.77 mmol) was added at 0° C. The mixture was stirred for 3 hours at room temperature. The compound was directly purified with silica chromatography using heptane/ethyl acetate as eluent to give a yield of 31%. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CD2Cl2) δ 7.41 (d, J=8.7, 2H), 7.32 (d, J=8.7, 2H), 7.25 (s, br, 1H, NH), 4.50 (s, 2H, CH2Br), 3.00 (s, 2H, CH2), 2.14 (s, 3H, CH3), 1.95 (d, 6H, CH3), 1.48 (s, 6H, CH3). MS (m/e): 418, 420 (1:1, M+).
