The crude (2-chloro-4-cyanophenyl)-[5-(2-hydroxyethyl)imidazol-1-yl]acetic acid methyl ester (2.06 g, 6.46 mmol) is dissolved in CH2Cl2 (25 mL) and stirred at 0° C. before Et3N (1.4 mL, 9.69 mmol) and methanesulfonyl chloride (0.6 mL, 7.75 mmol) are added. After completion of the reaction, the solution is partitioned between CH2Cl2 and aqueous saturated NaHCO3. The organic layer is dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated to give the crude (2-chloro-4-cyanophenyl)-[5-(2-methanesulfonyloxyethyl)imidazol-1-yl]-acetic acid methyl ester that is used without further purification. MS (ESI) m/z 398.2, 400.2 (M+H).
