A solution of ethyl 2-(2-carbamimidoylhydrazinyl)-2-oxoacetic acid (2 g, 35.60 mmol) in water (100 ml) was stirred for 12 h at 100° C. The resulting mixture was concentrated under vacuum to give a residue, which was precipitated from water (10 ml) to afford 5-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxylic acid as a white solid (1.1 g, 63%).
