A saturated solution of hydrogen chloride in ether (50 mL) was added to a solution of cis-tert-butyl 2-methyl-5-(pyrrolidine-1-carbonyl)piperidine-1-carboxylate (4.0 g, 13.49 mmol) in ether (10 mL) at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 h. The excess ethereal hydrogen chloride was evaporated and the residue was concentrated from diethyl ether to afford cis-(6-methylpiperidin-3-yl)(pyrrolidin-1-yl)methanone hydrochloride (3.0 g). The material was used without further purification.
