Reaction Steps
A suspension of 2.0 g of dihydro-6-carboxy-1-methyl-6-phosphono-1-pyrindinium iodide (Example 32) and 1.0 g of PtO2 in 50 ml of water is hydrogenated at 40 PSI and 50° for 2 days on a Parr apparatus. After the catalyst is removed by filtration, the filtrate is evaporated to dryness. The residue is recrystallized from water/acetone to yield octahydro-1-methyl-6-phosphono-1-pyrindine-6-carboxylic acid.
