Procedure

To a solution of N-(3-nitrobenzoyl)-L-alanine benzyl ester (5.0 g, 15.2 mmol) and ammonium chloride (8.2 g, 0.152 mol) in 90% aqueous ethanol (150 ml) was added portionwise iron powder (4.25 g, 76.1 mmol) under refluxing and stirring, which were continued for an additional 1 hour. The mixture was hot-filtered through Celite® (Johns Manville) and washed with hot aqueous ethanol. The filtrate was evaporated in vacuo to give a residue, which was extracted with ethyl acetate and the organic extract was washed with brine twice. After drying over MgSO4, the solvent was removed in vacuo to afford a viscous oil, which was crystallized soon on standing to give N-(3-aminobenzoyl)-L-alanine benzyl ester (4.5 g, 99.2% yield).
