Procedure

2 g (5.1 mmol) of methyl 6-(5,6,7,8-tetra-hydro-5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-2-naphthyloxy)naphthoate (prepared in Example 1(a)) and 60 ml of THF were introduced into a three-necked flask. 300 mg (7.7 mmol) of lithium aluminum hydride were introduced under a stream of nitrogen, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for two hours. Sodium sulfate hydrate was added, and the mixture was stirred until the excess hydride had hydrolysed. The salt was filtered off and the filtrate was evaporated. 1.91 g (99%) of the expected alcohol was recovered, having a melting point of 131°-3° C.
