Procedure

Dihydro-7-mercapto-1-pyrindine-6,6-bisphosphonic acid (0.5 mmol) [prepared as described in Example A hereinbefore], distilled water (100 ml) and PtO2 (0.5 g) are placed in a 500 ml Parr hydrogenation bottle. The mixture is hydrogenated at room temperature (40 psi) for 48 hours. The solution is filtered through celite and washed with hot water. The filtrate is then concentrated under reduced pressure and the desired product is obtained in good purity by further drying the resultant solid overnight under vacuum.
